Diversity and Servant Leadership Experiences
Mission Work
Since 2011, I have been blessed to go on four mission trips to the Dominican Republic with a non-profit organization called Cross Training. While on these trips, I served orphanages and villages suffering from homelessness by playing with the children and passing out thousands of pounds of non-perishable items. I also lead basketball clinics for hundreds of local children. These trips opened my eyes to the world around me and helped me to understand the true blessing of serving one another. I was looked upon as a leader by my mission team and was forced out of my comfort zone to lead at a capacity I never thought possible. These experiences have shaped who I am today and have helped prepare me for my future in education.

Instructional Aide
I was fortunate enough to work as an instructional aide in the special education department at Bismarck High before I became a full-time student at the University of Mary. This opportunity gave me great experience working with students with disabilities. These disabilities included Intellectual Disability, Other Health Impaired, Autism, Orthopedic Impairment, Speech Language, and Learning Disabilities. I was responsible for reteaching information to students, making adaptations to assignments, monitoring behaviors, and carrying out behavior plans as needed. I believe this experience will help me modify lessons and activities as a future educator. My goal as a teacher is to create an inclusive environment for all students in my classroom.

Adapted Physical Education Class
For one of my classes at the University of Mary, I was able to observe and teach in an adapted physical education class environment at Simle Middle School with Mrs. Leah Wheeling. This class focused on adapting skills and activities to meet the needs of students with disabilities. Although being an instructional aide gave me great experience adapting and modifying assignments in the general education classroom, this course taught me how I can make adaptations in the physical education setting.
